“She is a woman who enters her own power and confidence, and really capable of navigating what is healthy for her right now.” Minka Kelly told me about his character in the new Netflix series “Ransom Canyon”, but he can also talk about the Morena actor who made a Splash as Lyla Garrity in “Friday Night Lights” in the first things.
“I feel much more comfortable on my skin, as a woman, as a person, as an actor,” says Kelly, who joins Alexa through zoom from his home. “And I think all this kind of report on how I feel when I am ready. It’s the best experience I have had in my career.”
“Ransom Canyon”, based on the series of novels by Jodi Thomas, takes place in a dusty city of Texas, where several generations of small cities are affecting the challenges: Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) is a tragedy rancher fighting the pipeline taking a oil company for his land; Kelly plays Quinn O’Grady, a concert pianist who has moved to his hometown partly to help Staten through his penalty. Complicating things is a lifelong mutual crisis between the two, naturally. (We said soapy and sexy!) In the meantime, entertainer Lauren (Lizzy Greene) sails for a relationship with her football player (Andrew Liner) as a clandestine entanglement with a boy (Garrett Wareing) on the wrong side of the tracks. And a Statista Grand Rancher (James Brolin) hires a shady new hand of Ranch (Jack Schumacher) who seems ready to suffer problems.
Quinn is the most beautiful woman in the city, the interpretation (former star of the Cover of Alexa) Kelly, after all, and passes the series with a succession of magnificent western dresses, from cowboy hats and coats to the prairie dresses. Quinn also has a lavender farm. “I was like, what does it do? “Trust me, I was excited!”
“Ransom Canyon” has a lot of finger on the pulse of what viewers want. And what they want is a “Yellowstone”-“Friday Night Lights” Mashup Escapista. At one point, Quinn and Staten go to the Secondary School football game, where Kelly’s character looks satisfied while Lyla Garritys on the last day shown and turns on the field.
Do you want more tests from the connective tissue between the two shows? The creator of “Yellowstone”, Taylor Sheridan, was the coach of Kelly, when he was preparing his audition “Friday Night Light”. “I was completely new,” Kelly says with a laugh. “I had never tried a program or a pilot. And it was like:” OK, for this, you will enter, it will be 10 people who look at you and it will be intimidating. Don’t put your hands on your pockets if you are nervous. “It really was a great help to get” Friday night lights “for me.”
Often, a western one has a high dose of sexism in the oven, but given the female leadership behind “rescue”, things are a bit different, according to Kelly. The showrunner april Blair previously wrote for “Wednesday” and “You”, while the director Amanda Marsalis (“Ozark”, “The Pitt”) helped the first and two last episodes in the ten episodes race. The feminine perspective on western troops is palpable. When, for example, Staten presents himself at Quinn’s to help fix his broken tractor, and Quinn is the one who does his fixation. For Kelly, more important than gender -balanced stories was an implicit sense of trust and support that, according to her, has not always found in sets. “My heads are women, so they are very supportive of borders,” says Kelly, who has recently become a great fan of borders. “This is something I had conversations with some of the girls [on the show] How, how, it is OK to defend -and ask what you need! “”
For Kelly, 44, finding a safe space where working has been essential to continue the journey of self-defense and the discovery in which he has been for years, one that included publishing his acclaimed memory, “Tell me everyth”, two years ago. In it, Kelly unleashes a tumultuous education for her single mother, Maureen “Mo” Dumont Kelly, who worked as an exotic dancer and fought with substance abuse (died in 2008 of colon cancer). Kelly’s father is rock guitarist Rick Dufay, a former member of Aerosmith, who was largely absent from his childhood, during which he experienced physical abuse by one of his mother’s boyfriends. To her young adult, Kelly came out with an abusive man who pressed her to make a sexual ribbon. Finally, he found Escape in a modeling career, which caused parts on television and cinema before his great break “Friday Night Lights”.
Much of Kelly’s parenting was in Albuquerque, New Mexico, so when he learned that “Ransom Canyon” would shoot there, some psychological preparation was needed. “I had returned a few times, throughout my life, and it was always very emotional,” he says. “The idea of living -for six months it got a little nervous to me.” But he found this cathartic return. “Seeing,” as the most cured version of myself, I could appreciate all the beauty, “he says. “And my dog, the food. The Hatch Green Chile is so unique in New Mexico. He took me to the best parts of my childhood.”
But Kelly keeps her mother nearby, wherever she is. “It’s very present with me every day,” he says. “I keep his name in many ways. We go to the cafe in the street every day and they know how to put my order with the name of Mo.”
The other half of this “us” is the boy Dan Reynolds, the main singer of Imagine Dragons. They have been together since 2022, and Kelly extends the virtues to meet with someone right when you are a little older and wisest. “There is something that happens when he turns 40. Tues a level of level,” he says. “I am really in the best place I have been in my life, the healthiest relationship I have ever been. I was not ready for him so far; I had to learn all the lessons, to be able to defend -to have the limits, not to be a codpendent. Sometimes, when I describe my old self, or things that I tolerated, it is like,” you would never. It feels as if I had graduated, in a sense. “
It has also evolved into a southern sense that makes it deeply comfortable. “What causes a dress to feel good, first, is that I do not have to be adjusting -I do not even throw it all day,” he says, and he left his chair to show the brown sweater he wears. “It’s funny, I can feel that my friends are like,” You are always hiding your body! “He says. But for Kelly, Flowy is fashionable.” I love the black crane, “he says.” They have the most beautiful tissues. I like things to feel elegant, soft and fluid. From time to time, I will take a little more tightly, but but I end up changing almost as soon as I go home. “
Our shooting with Kelly on Hudson Yards put the “ransom” star in a series of aspects that describes as “Boho Western – Really Funny”. Kelly especially loved Ralph Lauren’s skirt and white blouse with a leather jacket. “It only felt like a party,” he says about the session. “Especially since it was the last day of the press tour!”
She is excited to have inactivity with Reynolds now and continue to practice the music she learned for the program. “Fortunately,” he says, “I move on to live with a classic masterful pianist. So it was of great help to teaching -the songs would be memorized and played again and again.” He got a unique emotion to learn a skill he would never know he would be able. “You are like” I can’t do this. “
In addition to “Ransom Canyon”, Kelly also starred in a nearby Netflix Rom-Com, “Champagne Problems”, who let her spend some time in her favorite place on Earth. “A romantic comedy is something he always wanted to do, and then he also shot in Paris,” he says.
I ask if you plan to keep track of your memory. “What made me able to write that book was the amount of time I had away from the subject, so it was not yet emotionally sensitive to many of these stories,” he says. “I would have prosecuted so much more than ten years. If I write another, I want to go back in this way.
“I am going through a really beautiful chapter of my life right now that I know I will want to write about a day,” he says. “I’m taking a lot of notes now.”
